Quality Control Examiner

Location – San Jose

Position Overview

The Quality Control Examiner is responsible for the ongoing development, implementation and integrity of the quality management system including Therma Quality Policy Statement, QC Standard Operating Procedures, and the ASME QC Manual functions. This position will work closely with management and employees to provide a highest quality working environment and develop a culture committed to highest quality workmanship and conscious record keeping and performance. Must be a strong hands-on leader and motivator capable of dealing with management, employees, and site personnel. The QCE must be able to manage, administer, and assure implementation of construction quality programs, Code compliance, good manufacturing practice, good documentation practice, training and assuring compliance with corporate procedures.

The QCR is responsible for the QC oversight of piping, pressure vessel, sheet metal and structural metal fabrications and record keeping throughout the large, multi-faceted operations of this organization. As the QCE, this person must be able to respond, investigate, report any non-conformances utilizing their experience and knowledge with Code requirements, regulations and customer specifications.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for implementation and assisting in the continuous improvement of the QC procedures and programs, policies and cultures.
  • Provide the direction and oversight necessary to achieve a workplace culture committed to highest quality and customer complaint free performance.
  • Provide the directions and oversight to achieve a culture in which quality issues of workmanship are viewed as unacceptable and a serious pre-cursor to larger quality issues possibly leading to injury/accidents.
  • Deliver first rate quality education in areas such as Welding Procedures, Code requirements, acceptance criteria, use of tools & equipment, and best practices within the construction industry.
  • Perform all required welder training and witness certification testing of all shop and field welding personnel.
  • Maintain all welding employee qualification continuity records.
  • At direction of QC Manager, investigate all external and internal Customer Complaints and other non-conformances related to quality workmanship issues to determine root causes & preventative measures. Assist QCM with Corrective Action plan implementation and verification of completion of Customer Complaints or Non-Conformances.
  • Team with Project Managers and Field Superintendents to enforce site specific quality programs and perform regular site visits to insure compliance with issued plans and directives.
  • Inspect production welding and assemblies on a routine basis to identify/correct potential workmanship issues & ensure Code regulation compliance.
  • Manage the Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) program at all project locations. Advise and train all employees of the specifics of each welded joint and relevant details for project.
  • On call for after-hours availability to address quality matters as necessary.

  • Must be an effective communicator (oral and written) with the ability to operate effectively without supervision. Must possess engaging training and presentation skills.
  • A minimum of 10 years construction experience.
  • A minimum of 2 years in a position with welding quality or welding responsibilities.
  • Experience working/welding in high-purity environments including gowning protocols and clean material handling.
  • Current valid CA drivers license.
  • Experience with ASME BPV Code Section IX Welding, Brazing and Fusing Qualifications.
  • Experience with ASME BPV Code Section VIII Pressure Vessels, B31.1 Power Piping, B31,3 Process Piping and B31.9 Building Services Piping.
  • Experience with AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code – Carbon Steel and other structural and sheet metal codes of AWS.
  • Experience following and editing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s).

Qualifications Preferred

  • American Welding Society – Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification
  • Experience with ASME Biopharmaceutical Equipment documentation and Quality Control requirements.
  • Experience with SEMI standard for high-purity installation for the semiconductor industry.
