Summer Internship Program 

Location: San Jose, CA/Southern CA

 We have an exciting opportunity for outstanding individuals to join our team as a Mechanical Engineering or Construction Project Management Intern at our headquarters in San Jose and our Lake Forest California office.

The Position

We believe an internship experience should be an opportunity to apply knowledge and theory learned in the classroom to actual construction projects.  Our approach allows the student to gain practical experience under direction of construction professional. The internship experience introduces the student to the transition required from the college environment to career at the same time allowing for personal and professional growth. Therma’s program will also expose the student to our unique capabilities and culture.

The program is designed to expose the student to the various aspects of the construction process. Typical job duties for the intern, based on educational background might include:

Construction Project Management

  • Estimating & Pre-Construction
  • Specification analysis
  • Takeoffs & Plan Reading
  • Material and subcontractor quote analysis
  • Bid Submission
  • Attend team meetings as required
  • Subcontractor coordination
  • Material ordering
  • Project Meeting Attendance &Documentation
  • Job Cost Review


  • Assist engineering staff with various project tasks, including researching, compiling and evaluation project data, preparing reports, and performing calculations
  • Performing simple calculation and data entry
  • Assist preparing technical operating procedures and manuals
  • Prepare mechanical construction drawings
  • Assist with the design and development of HVAC/plumbing systems
  • Performing research and contacting vendors for information

Educational Background Requirements and Eligibility

The internship program is open to college students studying a relevant field of education (e.g., construction management, mechanical engineering, etc.) The student must possess a valid driver’s license and may be required to pass pre-employment drug screening if a project requires testing. The student must have completed at least 2 years of undergraduate coursework at an accredited college or university towards pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering or construction management.

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Good interpersonal abilities for working in a team environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize and take direction
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to self-motivate and work productively without supervision
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and AutoCAD Civil 3D a plus
  • Proactive approach/self-starter/takes initiative
  • Positive attitude/team player

Time Requirement

The internship positions offered during the summer months are considered full time positions.  The student is expected to commit to a minimum of 40-hour work weeks. In the event, project deadlines require the intern to work more than 40 hours per week, he/she will be eligible for overtime pay. Start and end dates will coincide with the student’s school schedule.


Pay structure is based on an hourly rate, paid weekly. Pay rate is based on relevant experience.
Work Attire & Environment

Students are expected to dress professionally while they are working for Therma. Appropriate office attire includes jeans or kakis, shirts with collars and appropriate leather footwear. While in the field, interns will be expected to where jeans, shirts with sleeves, boots suitable for a construction site and all safety required PPE.


All interns will have the benefit of a full week of onboarding. This week will consist of the following:

  • Introduction of Therma’s capabilities, corporate Culture and Values
  • Review of Company Policies & Procedures
  • Intern responsibilities and expectations
  • Staff introductions
  • Safety orientation & PPE assignment
  • Facility Tour
  • Job site tour
  • Meet the Mentor
  • Ride along with Safety, HVAC and Test, Adjust & Balance (TAB) technicians


To make sure the intern does not get lost in the busy shuffle of the construction process, each student will be assigned a Mentor.  This mentor will advise the intern on program expectations and goals for the session.  Also, the mentor will make themselves available to the intern for consultation as questions arise on work assignments.  They will monitor the progress of the intern and perform the final evaluations at the end of the session.
